Stored Value
Money or credit held in an account or on a card, available for spending within a defined ecosystem.
Definition
Stored value refers to any prepaid financial value stored electronically on behalf of a customer. Unlike credit or debit cards (which access money in a bank account), stored value is standalone — the money is on the card or in the account itself. Stored value can be denominated in currency (dollars, euros) or in non-monetary units (points, meals, minutes). Common in gift cards, transit cards, phone credits, and closed-loop payment programs.
Examples
Metro card with stored transit fare
Phone card with stored calling minutes
Corporate meal card with stored meal credits
Gaming account with stored in-game currency
